Spooky, in the eye of the beholder. The waters off Ruby Beach are now National Marine Sanctuary territory, and off limits to the many large merchant ships traversing the Strait of Juan de Fuca.

In addition to modern navigation methods, this protection from shipping traffic helps alleviate the Pacific coast of the peninsula from being the extensive shipwreck graveyard so recently a part of the past.

Access to Rialto and nearby Second Beach on the peninsula’s Pacific coast is by permission of the Quileute tribe, which seeks to trade claim to Rialto Beach for higher ground from Olympic National Park due to buildings, including a small tribal school, in the tsunami zone.

Quileute tsunami evacuation drills are in progress while negotiations ensue.
